Luna Rocks (Hellbent X Fimatino)

Luna Rocks has made a spectacular start to her career and is clearly a filly on the move for the NSW Tycoons. Trainers Richard and Will Freedman are aiming high with Lunar Rocks, convinced she is a “Stakes class” fair to say they like her a lot.
Since entering the stable the Freedmans have always had a big opinion of this regally bred filly who is way above average. Many will remember her debut on a Heavy 10 at Newcastle during a rain bomb when beaten by the narrowest of margins. She then romped home at Warwick Farm with a huge band of triumphant owners filling the winner’s room for a well-deserved champagne. She was quickly elevated to listed class contesting the Woodlands Stakes on the Scone standalone meeting, only to miss the kick and was posted wide the entire journey finishing a tough fifth behind the superstar filly In Secret. Luna Rocks is a half sister to the 2YO Magic Millions winner Shaquero and was purchased for $360,000 at the 2021 Magic Millions sale.
While the Freedman’s were delighted with what ‘Luna’ has achieved as a 2YO, they have no doubt she will not only be a better 3YO but also an even better 4YO providing years of enjoyment for Tycoons owners.

Blue Thorpedo (Headwater X Pfeiffer)

Blue Thorpedo made everyone sit up and take notice with one of her initial barrier trials but subsequently suffered from shin soreness. Trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott remain delighted to have her in the stable and see a bright future for this talented filly. She has always been a farm favourite at Emeran Park. She loves her work and is as tough as nails earning her the stable name of ‘Tonka’ as in Tonka Tough.
She’s had two educational stints with the Waterhouse/Bott yard, shown good ability, and will be back for a Summer/Autumn campaign. Blue Thorpedo is by young sire Headwater who ticks all the boxes! Headwater was bred for pure speed, being by a Gr.1 Newmarket Hcp winner, out of a Gr.1 Oakleigh Plate winner.
This filly is considered an absolute steal from the 2021 Magic Millions sale purchased for only $80,000. Tycoons are sure to be rewarded for their patience.

Cool Jakey (Pierro X Cool Snitzel)

Trainer Mark Newnham had a close association with this bloke’s dad, the unbeaten 2YO Triple Crown winner Pierro who needs no introduction, and Mark is delighted to have him in his stable.
Like most Pierro’s, Cool Jakey was never going to be an early 2YO type. Mark loves the breed and certainly likes what he’s seen so far from this horse.
Cool Jakey has been given plenty of time and as the legendary Bart Cummings used to say “the only thing free in racing is patience, and it’s sometimes the hardest thing to have”.
Pierro has already proved himself at stud, being a champion first, second and third-season sire in Australia. It is no surprise that he currently stands at a service fee of $137,500 and how lucky are the NSW Tycoons to have a horse by this super sire.

Sidenay (Star Turn x Blitz N Magic)

And the winner is “Sidenay” that’s certainly what NSW Tycoons owners are trusting to hear from the commentators with this son of Star Turn x Blitz n Magic.
Trained by Kim Waugh, Sidenay has been given plenty of time to develop by the Tycoons. His first career start was a luckless effort at Wyong in April 2022 when things didn’t go right. Kim has enormous time for the Star Turn breed and Sidenay himself. He is on target to give his owners plenty of thrills.
Sidenay showed his potential and turn of foot in his first barrier trial, storming down the outside for a super win back in March at Gosford. Kim has high hopes for Sidenay delivering on his class for Tycoons owners.

ETCHED IN TIME

Etched In Time

NSW Tycoons owners have reason to be excited by their 2YO colt regally bred by champion sire Written Tycoon out of a Group 1 winning mare in Steps In Time. This bloke has given every indication he is heading places. Etched In Time is no shrinking violet he weighs in over 530kgs and is an imposing specimen. Again he will be given plenty of time to reach his potential. In his initial period with Richard and Will Freedman at their Rosehill stable, he ticked all the boxes and took to stable life with ease. Described by Richard as athletic, powerful in the backside and light on his feet, the stable is excited by what lies ahead. He was  purchased for $160,000 plus GST from the Inglis Premier Sale at Oaklands in Melbourne, where he was expected to top the sale. TRL’s Bloodstock team may well have pulled off a masterstroke in being able to secure such an outstanding individual at such a palatable price.

Zoustar x Oklahoma girl trained by richard and will freedman

Zoustar x Oklahoma Girl

This Zoustar colt was one for the early risers and the fact that it was the second horse through for the entire sale certainly played in favour of TRL. Champion 1st, 2nd and 3rd season sire Zoustar has certainly stamped this colt. He was at the top of Richard and Will Freedman’s shopping list and TRL Head of Bloodstock Mick Malone agreed. Zoustar stands for $198,000 so to secure it for $220,000 was fantastic shopping. He’s out of a Fastnet Rock mare who ran third in a QLD Oaks and Oaks horses have a great record of producing on the track. It’s a really powerful pedigree and off a great farm in Rosemont Stud.

Pierata x bellevue girl trained by gai waterhouse and adrian bott

Pierata x Bellevue Girl

Secured in partnership with Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, who know this family extremely well. The stable trained the three-quarter brother Bellevue Hill who was a serious 2yo contender, running second in the Todman behind Yes Yes Yes with Dubious third. TRL Head of Bloodstock Mick Malone was taken by the filly both on pedigree and as a type. “If this filly can run she is worth plenty on the track and with great residual value as a broodmare,” Malone said. Your filly’s half-brother is a 2yo gelding called Hachiman, who is trained by the Maher/Eustace stable and is being aimed at the Group 1 JJ Atkins, victory there would see the value of your filly skyrocket. Fingers Crossed.

NSW TYCOONS TRAINERS

The Lady of Racing, Gai Waterhouse, leads the NSW Tycoons with Adrian Bott and is accompanied by leading trainers Richard and Will Freedman, Joe Pride, Mark Newnham, Kim Waugh and Brett Cavanough. Imagine having all those trainers as your trainers!

Richard & Will Freedman Racehorse trainers for the NSW Tycoons

Richard and Will Freedman

Richard and Will Freedman are now a partnership. Their family history in racing goes back 4 generations to their great grandfather Bill “Midge” McLachlan who rode 3 Melbourne Cup winners.
As a team headed by eldest brother Lee, Richard, Michael and Anthony Freedman combined to carve out their own place in thoroughbred history, winning 5 Melbourne Cups, 5 Caulfield Cups, 2 Cox Plates and 4 consecutive Golden Slippers, in a tally stretching over 100 Group 1 victories.

Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott

Gai is arguably the biggest name in racing, her honour roll is amazing, there’s the Golden Slippers, the Melbourne Cup, the Cox Plates and everything in between. She learnt the trade from the greatest of all time, her father Tommy won 33 consecutive Sydney premierships and now she’s passing on that knowledge to Adrian Bott.

It is Gai’s enthusiasm that continues to amaze Bott, who can already boast a Slipper of his own amongst many other impressive victories. Their partnership just seems to work, as they continue to train winners together.

Kim Waugh

Kim is a trailblazer, first as a champion harness driver and trainer, before switching with enormous success to the thoroughbreds. She has experienced Group 1 glory winning the Sydney Cup with Mahtoum who went on to finished fifth in the Melbourne Cup.
While training out of the Wyong Race Club, Kim also has a state of the out spelling and pre-training farm within a stone’s throw of the track. It is her passionate love of not only the horse, but all animals that draws people to Kim and her training expertise.

joe pride horse trainer cool jakey

Joe Pride

Joe Pride’s reputation as a trainer continues to rise at a rapid rate, most recently winning the $3 million Stradbroke Handicap with Think About It. Always a master trainer of a tried horse and improving them significantly, Joe is now racking up Group 1 victories as well. Horse racing wasn’t in Joe’s blood, he initially studied psychology at Sydney University, before horse racing took over and he learned from one of the best in John Size. When Size moved to Hong Kong, Joe stepped in as stable boss and he has never looked back. An original NSW Tycoons trainer Cool Jakey is in the best of hands with Joe Pride.

Freedman Brothers

Richard and Michael Freedman are now a partnership again, Richard training the older horses out of Rosehill while Michael nurtures the younger horses from the Randwick stables.

Joe Pride

Joe Pride had no family link with the racing industry, and was actually studying psychology at University when the fascination with the horse struck and he joined the powerful John Size stable, learning his tricks of the trade.
Joe proved himself to be a quick learner and when Size shifted to Hong Kong, Pride took out his own training license and quickly made his mark. He started by focusing on improving tried horses like Vision and Power and reinvigorating them to achieve Group One success. Now from his Warwick Farm stable, Joe is among the elite trainers and boasts 13 Group 1 victories to his name, and the success keeps coming!

Brett Cavanough

A larger than life character, Brett Cavanough has certainly done the hard yards, riding track work at the age of 12 for his grandfather. Cav has won the title of New South Wales leading country trainer on 5 occasions, defeating the likes of Paul Perry, Kris Lees and Barbara Joseph, a remarkable effort for an Albury-based trainer.
Last year he won the prestigious Kosciuszko at Royal Randwick with his stable star It’s Me. Cav is without doubt a “likeable larrikin”, and his success is based on the simple principles of hard work and professionalism that come from growing up in outback Queensland.

Mark Newnham

Like so many, Mark’s “rapid rise” has been decades in the making. Starting at the age of 15 as a strapper, to apprentice and then as a jockey with over 300 wins. Mark learnt from the best with a long stint in the stables of the legendary Bart Cummings and as a foreman for Gai Waterhouse, before quickly making his mark as a trainer in his own right.

Mark’s trump card can be seen as the fact that he still rides his own horses in work and key gallops, which gives him a unique insight into the horse itself. He already has 4 Group 1 wins to his name in his short 5 year training career, and we are sure they will keep on coming.

NSW TYCOONS AMBASSADOR

One thing Laurie Daley loves more than cheering on his Canberra Raiders, is kicking home a winner. “Loz” is New South Wales to the core. On top of three premierships, he is one of only two men to play, captain and coach the Blues to an Origin series win.
More modest about his remarkable achievements on the rugby league field, Laurie will proudly tell you of his long celebrations when his horse won a feature race over the Flemington Spring carnival.

NSW TYCOONS MANAGER

Tye brings The NSW Tycoons a genuine competitive edge. As an 11 time Group 1 winning jockey Tye understands the intricacies of racing at a level not many can match. He has been there and done that on racing’s big stage and knows what it takes to find an edge for his team.
When it comes down to having an ear close to the ground, collecting critical race day intel, this will likely prove a genuine edge for The Tycoons.
