This Weekend in Racing: The Autumn Carnival Season

Feb 5, 2021

Before we start off this weekends upcoming races we’re taking a look back at the highlight of the past week coming from the track at Kilmore.

“The unbridled thrill of ownership” that’s one of the cornerstones of The Racing League.

If you’ve owned before you know exactly what we are talking about, if you’re a first time owner you are in for a real treat. Ownership delivers a thrill like know other – even for professional sports people.  A horse called Champs D’Or won at Kilmore on Thursday, it’s owned by some high profile Swans players who have played and won at the highest level on the biggest stage.

But nothing beats ownership, check out their reaction in the video below, it’s GOLD and a sign of things to come for TRL owners. Watch their reaction video HERE.

Unofficially The Autumn Starts this Saturday

When does the Autumn Racing carnival start?

For mine it’s always been when the big guns come to play in CF Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield – and that’s this Saturday.

Sure, I understand there’s still 3 weeks of Summer remaining, but when a stunning Cox Plate winner like Sir Dragonet returns to the track, I reckon Autumn has started.

Trained by TRL trainer Ciaron Maher, Sir Dragonet won the coveted Cox Plate last Spring with his first start in this country before finishing a gallant sixth in the Melbourne Cup.

He’s drawn barrier 3, his lead-up trials have been fantastic and Glen Boss stated “I’ve been waiting ten years for a horse like this”. Sir Dragonet is a four-legged excitement machine and a justified favourite for the CF Orr.

BLUE DIAMOND SEMI – FINALS

Categories like Previews and Preludes can be confusing for punters when assessing the lead-up to the Blue Diamond.

I always like to think of the Previews staged two weeks ago as the Quarter-Finals. Saturday’s Preludes as the Semi-Finals with the Grand Final on February 20, The Blue Diamond itself. To add to the confusion the fillies division tomorrow (Race 2) is rated a Group 2, but the colts and geldings division (Race 3) is a Group 3, but they both have the same $200,000 prize purse.

Go figure.

PROFITEER BOUGHT BY NEWGATE

Queensland Rogue owners probably should give a cheer for hot favourite Profiteer in Saturday’s $2million Inglis Millennium at Royal Randwick.

The Tycoons are now proud owners of a Flying Artie/Laylia colt which was bought off Newgate Farm at the Magic Millions Sales and we talk a lot about buying from quality farms, like Newgate, as part of our TRL criteria.

Newgate Farm has just purchased a majority share in Profiteer trained by TRL trainer Mick Price. Profiteer was born at Newgate Farm and after paying a rumoured $1million plus for a majority share it will be a nervous but thrilling day for Newgate boss Henry Field.

Good luck Henry and his team.

 EAGLE FARM CONTROVERSY

Racing returns to Eagle Farm on Saturday but there’s no shortage of controversy regarding the track surface. Considered the “headquarters” of racing in South East Queensland many believe the surface is not up to scratch with trainer David Vandyke refusing to start any of his horses at Eagle Farm.

Still, the show goes on with nine races and big fields.

Toby and Trent Edmonds who thrilled Queensland Rogue’s owners with their trainer pitch should be winning Race 6 (1200m) with She Za Boss. She had no luck first-up when from a bad gate was trapped wide but was still a fast closing third.

She Za Boss has a good draw on Saturday and should get the run of the race.

TODD HARVEY SET TO STRIKE

Todd Harvey has made his pitch to train for the WA Black Hearts and is making the trip from his Belmont base to Pinjarra Park with a great value chance Lipstick Flickers in Race 6 (1300m).

Lipstick Flickers has been good in her first two starts this prep, Todd has her on a seven day back-up and she’s at double figure odds.

Good Luck

This Weekend in Racing: The Autumn Carnival Season

Feb 5, 2021

Cool Jakey was the King of Warwick Farm  on Wednesday and NSW Tycoons owners would like to package the Metropolitan track and just take it wherever Cool Jakey goes after he kept his undefeated record intact.

It’s remarkable that ‘Jakey’, trained on track and stabled across the road with Joe Pride, is one of those athletes, albeit of the equine kind, who thrives on his home ground.

He won on debut at Warwick Farm way back in February of 2023 and the love affair hasn’t ended, Cool Jakey has now won 4 from 4 at ‘The Farm’ and there’s plenty more wins in store for your son of Pierro.

BOUNCE BACK FACTOR

As Tycoons were made aware of, there’s a theory in racing that when a horse suffers from cardiac arrhythmia, “you must back it next start” and they win.

And that was certainly the message after Cool Jakey suffered cardiac arrhythmia the previous start at Randwick, with Joe Pride telling Tycoons in the pre-race late mail, “Don’t worry about what happened last start, the horse is fine and he looks great,” how right Joe was with Cool Jakey leading all the way.

HIPPO FROM BARRIER TO BOX

Adam Hyeronimus was having his first sit on Cool Jakey and he rode him a treat. We joked before the race “just go to the front and improve your position” and that’s exactly what he did.

“He jumped well and found a nice rhythm straight away, he had a nice time so I let him slide early into it at the 600metres so we did go a bit early.

“He felt fantastic throughout the run and was doing it easily, so I did get a bit of a surprise how quickly he stopped.

“So maybe I did go too early, but in saying that, maybe seven furlongs is his upper limit. On that effort he’ll be winning again” Jockey Adam Hyeronimus said.

JOE DELIGHTED

“That was good guys” trainer Joe Pride said, with a big smile to a large contingent of NSW Tycoons on Cool Jakey returning to scale.

“Look it was nice to see him win on a track that wasn’t bottomless wet, it opens up a lot more opportunities for him.

“In saying that if there was a 1400m for him in a fortnight on a Good track I would probably be reluctant to start him. We need to nurse him through it and the next month – six weeks isn’t going to be easy because it’s carnival time.

WHATS NEXT – PACK YOUR BAGS

The Tycoons have been very patient with Cool Jakey and their patience has been rewarded. He is building a very nice career record which stands at only 13 starts for 5 wins and a minor placing and is now pushing the $200,000 in prize money.

‘Jakey’ has initially pulled up well, but we all know that he is a delicate soul and has to be treated with kindness and Joe is reluctant to push him too hard too quickly. Which is fair enough.

“We might even consider travelling him maybe to Melbourne or Brisbane for a wet track, we just need to look after him.

“He’s been a good horse for us, we will look after him and his best opportunities will come in the Winter,” Joe concluded.

Congratulations to all NSW Tycoons and winning connections.

Go you good thing!
