This Weekend in Racing: Racing’s Magic Round

May 20, 2021

Congratulations to NSW Tycoons trainer Joe Pride in winning last week’s time-honoured Doomben 10,000 with Eduardo, which I see according to some experts is now rated the world’s fourth best sprinter, some claim to fame considering he was a modest tried horse when secured by the Pride stable. We are certainly trusting that Joe will work his magic when the bloodstock team from TRL secures their ready to run horse for Pride in the immediate future.

DOOMBEN SPOTLIGHT

This weekend’s racing spotlight is certainly on Brisbane with the running of the Doomben Cup, Doomben Roses and the Doomben Sprint. Queensland Rogues trainer Tony Gollan has some great chances throughout the day including Garibaldi in the Group 3 Doomben Sprint (1350m) where he’s already been well supported in early markets. Garibaldi has been a frustrating horse for Gollan and also punters. In his 19 starts he’s been beaten as favourite five times including last start at Eagle Farm where he never got a crack at them. According to Tony “He’s been doing a good job over 1200m and he’s out to 1350m now and with the way he races and the way he switches off I don’t hold any massive fears about that.”

BET: Garibaldi – Win

FIFTY TO STAR

The Doomben Cup is a cracking race with Zaaki a deserved favourite after a stunning victory in the Hollindale Cup at the Gold Coast. Fifty Stars, trained by the Vic Husslers duo of Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig was a courageous runner-up to Zaaki at the Gold Coast and while it’s a bold man to predict that Fifty Stars can turn the tables he can certainly run in the top three at double digit odds.

BET: Fifty Stars – Place

ROSEHILL – KEEP AN EYE OUT

Plenty of interest for NSW Tycoons owners in Race Two at Rosehill with the horse that beat their very own The Sherpa last start at Mudgee named Blow Dart coming to town to have a crack at the big boys. To be fair Blow Dart faces a big task stepping up to 1300m for the first time, but he’s only been beaten once and was pretty good in defeating The Sherpa. I actually like one from the Waterhouse/Bott yard here in Volcanic Rock. He was really good winning on debut, has had a spell, been tuned up in a couple of trials by Gai and is ready to win first-up at good odds.

BET: Volcanic Rock – Eachway

MOODY MAGIC

We should be able to get off to a flying start at Flemington courtesy of Vic Husslers trainer Peter Moody. The likeable larrikin has the weirdly named but talented Snickledoodledandy in Race 1. The ex WA galloper was good last start, has an unbeaten record second-up and thrives over 1400m – that all adds up to a good bet.

BET: Snickledoodledandy – Win

BELMONT

Our WA Black Heart trainers have many runners at Belmont, but I’m happy to stick with Ben and Dan Pearce in the Amelia Park – Race 6. The Pearce brothers train the talented Alimony, this filly has only had five starts and never finished worse than second. She was a good winner at Ascot last start, has been given a bit of a break and should be extremely hard to beat.

BET: Alimony – Win

This Weekend in Racing: Racing’s Magic Round

May 20, 2021

Cool Jakey was the King of Warwick Farm  on Wednesday and NSW Tycoons owners would like to package the Metropolitan track and just take it wherever Cool Jakey goes after he kept his undefeated record intact.

It’s remarkable that ‘Jakey’, trained on track and stabled across the road with Joe Pride, is one of those athletes, albeit of the equine kind, who thrives on his home ground.

He won on debut at Warwick Farm way back in February of 2023 and the love affair hasn’t ended, Cool Jakey has now won 4 from 4 at ‘The Farm’ and there’s plenty more wins in store for your son of Pierro.

BOUNCE BACK FACTOR

As Tycoons were made aware of, there’s a theory in racing that when a horse suffers from cardiac arrhythmia, “you must back it next start” and they win.

And that was certainly the message after Cool Jakey suffered cardiac arrhythmia the previous start at Randwick, with Joe Pride telling Tycoons in the pre-race late mail, “Don’t worry about what happened last start, the horse is fine and he looks great,” how right Joe was with Cool Jakey leading all the way.

HIPPO FROM BARRIER TO BOX

Adam Hyeronimus was having his first sit on Cool Jakey and he rode him a treat. We joked before the race “just go to the front and improve your position” and that’s exactly what he did.

“He jumped well and found a nice rhythm straight away, he had a nice time so I let him slide early into it at the 600metres so we did go a bit early.

“He felt fantastic throughout the run and was doing it easily, so I did get a bit of a surprise how quickly he stopped.

“So maybe I did go too early, but in saying that, maybe seven furlongs is his upper limit. On that effort he’ll be winning again” Jockey Adam Hyeronimus said.

JOE DELIGHTED

“That was good guys” trainer Joe Pride said, with a big smile to a large contingent of NSW Tycoons on Cool Jakey returning to scale.

“Look it was nice to see him win on a track that wasn’t bottomless wet, it opens up a lot more opportunities for him.

“In saying that if there was a 1400m for him in a fortnight on a Good track I would probably be reluctant to start him. We need to nurse him through it and the next month – six weeks isn’t going to be easy because it’s carnival time.

WHATS NEXT – PACK YOUR BAGS

The Tycoons have been very patient with Cool Jakey and their patience has been rewarded. He is building a very nice career record which stands at only 13 starts for 5 wins and a minor placing and is now pushing the $200,000 in prize money.

‘Jakey’ has initially pulled up well, but we all know that he is a delicate soul and has to be treated with kindness and Joe is reluctant to push him too hard too quickly. Which is fair enough.

“We might even consider travelling him maybe to Melbourne or Brisbane for a wet track, we just need to look after him.

“He’s been a good horse for us, we will look after him and his best opportunities will come in the Winter,” Joe concluded.

Congratulations to all NSW Tycoons and winning connections.

Go you good thing!
