This Weekend in Racing: The Queensland Charge

Massive weekend in the short history of The Racing League with the Queensland Rogues having their first runner at the track in the shape of The Big Goodbye at Eagle Farm. We wish trainer Rob Heathcote and all the owners the very best of luck, let the beer and champagne flow at Tatts Day in Brisbane. In Melbourne, it’s Feehan Stakes Day at Moonee Valley with the rail in the true position. While at Randwick the speedsters line-up in the Concorde Stakes headed by Nature Strip.

Let’s try and find some winners from our TRL trainers.

 

HEATHCOTE TO LEAD THE QUEENSLAND CHARGE

 Couldn’t be a better man in Queensland to make history with the first runner for the Queensland Rogues than trainer Rob Heathcote. A long time champion of the micro-ownership movement, Heathcote has The Big Goodbye ready to rip in Race 7 at Eagle Farm. “The Big Goodbye has worked well and if he runs up to his Adelaide form will be hard to beat” said Heathcote. Rob has the miRunners owned Dusty Tycoon (Race 9) on a seven day back-up after a terrific second to Miami Fleiss last Saturday. “Dusty pulled up well and the 1400 metres should suit” said Heathcote.

Aswaat (Race 1) could get the day off to a winning start for the Heathcote yard, she’s coming off a strong win at the Sunshine Coast and with Leah Kilner’s claim can win again. While Warp Speed (Race 4) pulled up lame last start so had excuses, he’s set to go forward here and be strong late.

SEEING IS BELIEVING – TONY GOLLAN

 Eight time premiership winning trainer Tony Gollan is a regular in the winners stall and there’s no reason he won’t be back there at Eagle Farm on Saturday. Seeingisbelieving (Race 3) finished a distant third last start but is a tough warrior and should strip much fitter for that effort Le Palmier (Race 5) was just nosed out last start and will take great benefit from the run. Royal Hale (Race 6) makes his own luck and is coming off a good win last start, Tony thinks there’s no reason why he can’t go back to back.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GAI AND ADRIAN

 

Hip Hip Hooray…it’s quite remarkable that training partners Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott actually share the same birthday September 2, which just happened to be last Thursday. And they could be celebrating with a couple of winners this Saturday. High class fillies line-up in the Furious Stakes (Race 6) with the Waterhouse trained Silent Witness still the one to beat in my eyes after a big win first-up at good odds. Shout The Bar (Race 7) is an outside chance in Tramway but to be honest Zaaki just looks like a good thing. Gai and Adrian have taken Huesca (Race 3) to Moonee Valley and it could prove a winning move. Huesca has the perfect record, one start for one win and after knocking over Construct last start can win again.

KEEP AN EYE ON CAV

NSW Tycoons country trainer Brett Cavanough is looking at another lightning raid to the big smoke with Patino Ruby (Race 2) at Royal Randwick. The big fella (that’s Cav) has given her a nice spell after a brilliant win at Rosehill eight weeks ago. She’s already been specked in the markets, has a great fresh record and Brett is confident.

FORGET YOU AND SIERRA SUE FOR BUSUTTIN

 We are looking for the good form of the Busuttin/Young stable to continue at Moonee Valley on Saturday. Forgot You (Race 1) was a good thing beaten last start when it loomed into the race only for the gap to close and it finished third. With a bit more luck Forgot You will atone for that defeat. Sierra Sue (Race 8) surprised plenty last start when she went from winning at Mildura to taking out the WFA Lawrence Stakes. I don’t think that was any fluke and the old saying goes “mares in form stay in form” we will stick solid around that $6 mark.

MAHER MADNESS

 Ciaron Maher and Dave Eustace won five of the six races at Ballarat last Sunday and they didn’t have a runner in the sixth race. Not too sure there’ll have five winners at Moonee Valley on Saturday but they have a strong book. Nikau Spur (Race 2) has won three of five this campaign and at $8 is an each way play. Dr Drill (Race 4) has been disappointing for mine this campaign while Heart of Puissance (Race 4) has never won first up. Biscayne Bay (Race 6) is worth keeping a close eye on, she’s resuming after winning the SA Sires and is currently a $20 chance, watch the markets for her to firm. Really hard to split the stable’s two runners Away Game and Bella Nipotina in Race 7. The inside barrier for Bella Nipotina should give it the advantage over Away Game (barrier 19).

Cool Jakey was the King of Warwick Farm  on Wednesday and NSW Tycoons owners would like to package the Metropolitan track and just take it wherever Cool Jakey goes after he kept his undefeated record intact. 

It’s remarkable that ‘Jakey’, trained on track and stabled across the road with Joe Pride, is one of those athletes, albeit of the equine kind, who thrives on his home ground. 

He won on debut at Warwick Farm way back in February of 2023 and the love affair hasn’t ended, Cool Jakey has now won 4 from 4 at ‘The Farm’ and there’s plenty more wins in store for your son of Pierro.

BOUNCE BACK FACTOR 

As Tycoons were made aware of, there’s a theory in racing that when a horse suffers from cardiac arrhythmia, “you must back it next start” and they win. 

And that was certainly the message after Cool Jakey suffered cardiac arrhythmia the previous start at Randwick, with Joe Pride telling Tycoons in the pre-race late mail, “Don’t worry about what happened last start, the horse is fine and he looks great,” how right Joe was with Cool Jakey leading all the way.

HIPPO FROM BARRIER TO BOX

Adam Hyeronimus was having his first sit on Cool Jakey and he rode him a treat. We joked before the race “just go to the front and improve your position” and that’s exactly what he did. 

“He jumped well and found a nice rhythm straight away, he had a nice time so I let him slide early into it at the 600metres so we did go a bit early. 

“He felt fantastic throughout the run and was doing it easily, so I did get a bit of a surprise how quickly he stopped. 

“So maybe I did go too early, but in saying that, maybe seven furlongs is his upper limit. On that effort he’ll be winning again” Jockey Adam Hyeronimus said.

JOE DELIGHTED

“That was good guys” trainer Joe Pride said, with a big smile to a large contingent of NSW Tycoons on Cool Jakey returning to scale. 

“Look it was nice to see him win on a track that wasn’t bottomless wet, it opens up a lot more opportunities for him. 

“In saying that if there was a 1400m for him in a fortnight on a Good track I would probably be reluctant to start him. We need to nurse him through it and the next month – six weeks isn’t going to be easy because it’s carnival time.

WHATS NEXT – PACK YOUR BAGS

The Tycoons have been very patient with Cool Jakey and their patience has been rewarded. He is building a very nice career record which stands at only 13 starts for 5 wins and a minor placing and is now pushing the $200,000 in prize money. 

‘Jakey’ has initially pulled up well, but we all know that he is a delicate soul and has to be treated with kindness and Joe is reluctant to push him too hard too quickly. Which is fair enough. 

“We might even consider travelling him maybe to Melbourne or Brisbane for a wet track, we just need to look after him.

“He’s been a good horse for us, we will look after him and his best opportunities will come in the Winter,” Joe concluded.
