This Weekend in Racing: Wet & Wild Up on the Gold Coast

Break out the flippers and the snorkel it’s set to be a wet weekend in Sydney and the Gold Coast with only Caulfield racing on a good tack at this stage. For The Racing League, the Qld Rogues will have The Big Goodbye in action at the Gold Coast this Saturday. Penso A Lei will carry the NSW Tycoons colours on Wednesday at Warwick Farm while the Vic Husslers are back to back next weekend with Bellinger under lights on Friday at Moonee Valley, while Team Captain is looking to make it four straight wins in the Pakenham Cup.

 

ROB HEATHCOTE TO SWIM AT GOLD COAST

 After a torrential week of rain and more predicted for Saturday, Qld Rogues trainer Rob Heathcote isn’t overly optimistic of racing going ahead at the Gold Coast. The good news is that The Big Goodbye (Race 9) gets through the going with one start on a heavy track for one win. He was desperately unlucky last start when third behind the impressive Salateen with the pair clashing again tomorrow. The Big Goodbye has been the best backed runner in the race, firming from $14 to $9 with Sportsbet.

HOME GROUND ADVANTAGE FOR COSTA

Being on your home track is always an advantage for a two-year-old making it’s first race day visit. Michael Costa looks like he has a nice prospect on his hands with Perfect Mission (Race 1). It’s a mystery if any of the youngsters get through the ground, but money talks and Perfect Mission has been well supported on Sportsbet firming into $3.70. Morethannumberone (Race 6) has won on the soft and been placed twice on the heavy, he is clearly the one to beat.

MOODY ON A MISSION

The Zipping Classic meeting at Caulfield features nine Group or Listed races on a track expected to be rated Good. Moody has picked up Spanish Mission (Race 7) after his gallant third in the Melbourne Cup despite an injury cloud leading up to the big race. Spanish Mission is clearly the best horse in the field and should be better than this lot in Zipping Classic. The race experience plus a brilliant win down the straight at Flemington has me pretty comfortable with another Moody runner Brereton (Race 1). Moody also has Allegretta (Race 3) and while Decent Raine is clearly the pick, I’m keen on Allegretta to run a cheeky race.

MAHER & EUSTACE WITH A MASSIVE ASSAULT

A little TRL stable whisper during the week with Ciaron Maher revealing the team is extremely impressed by two-year-old Eureka Storm for the Vic Husslers team. The So You Think colt is now spelling but according to Maher there’s plenty for Husslers owners to look forward to. On Saturday, Enthaar (Race 4) is now second-up, on a track she likes after a great effort behind Profiteer last start. Steinman (Race 5) has been racing in much stronger company, he’ll appreciate the drop in grade and should power home late.

MICK PRICE TO BEGIN A NEW ERA

After decades of training out of Caulfield, Mick Price has now moved permanently to his new base in Cranbourne with Michael Kent Junior. Our Playboy (Race 8) had no luck whatsoever in the Cranbourne Cup last start when he got a long way back, was forced wide before rattling home for second. With some luck from barrier one he should be winning.

PRIDE ON THE MARK AT ROSEHILL

 Trainer Joe Pride will have Penso A Lei in action on Wednesday at Warwick Farm for the NSW Tycoons. But first he’s keen on Brutality (Race 8) at Rosehill on Saturday. Brutality was a real eye catcher last start and the heavy track will be no hinderance.

BET: Brutality – Each Way (Rosehill Race 8)

 

 

BONE AND MUSCLE

If they race, it will be survival of the fitness at Rosehill and you always know horses from the Waterhouse/Bott stable will be fit. So United (Race 6) stands out, as a horse who’ll make its own luck out in front, get through the ground while many will be out the back with their wheels spinning. Too Much Caviar (Race 10) has been one of the best backed runners at Rosehill. He is now third-up, rock hard fit, gets through soft ground and should be okay on the heavy.

Cool Jakey was the King of Warwick Farm  on Wednesday and NSW Tycoons owners would like to package the Metropolitan track and just take it wherever Cool Jakey goes after he kept his undefeated record intact. 

It’s remarkable that ‘Jakey’, trained on track and stabled across the road with Joe Pride, is one of those athletes, albeit of the equine kind, who thrives on his home ground. 

He won on debut at Warwick Farm way back in February of 2023 and the love affair hasn’t ended, Cool Jakey has now won 4 from 4 at ‘The Farm’ and there’s plenty more wins in store for your son of Pierro.

BOUNCE BACK FACTOR 

As Tycoons were made aware of, there’s a theory in racing that when a horse suffers from cardiac arrhythmia, “you must back it next start” and they win. 

And that was certainly the message after Cool Jakey suffered cardiac arrhythmia the previous start at Randwick, with Joe Pride telling Tycoons in the pre-race late mail, “Don’t worry about what happened last start, the horse is fine and he looks great,” how right Joe was with Cool Jakey leading all the way.

HIPPO FROM BARRIER TO BOX

Adam Hyeronimus was having his first sit on Cool Jakey and he rode him a treat. We joked before the race “just go to the front and improve your position” and that’s exactly what he did. 

“He jumped well and found a nice rhythm straight away, he had a nice time so I let him slide early into it at the 600metres so we did go a bit early. 

“He felt fantastic throughout the run and was doing it easily, so I did get a bit of a surprise how quickly he stopped. 

“So maybe I did go too early, but in saying that, maybe seven furlongs is his upper limit. On that effort he’ll be winning again” Jockey Adam Hyeronimus said.

JOE DELIGHTED

“That was good guys” trainer Joe Pride said, with a big smile to a large contingent of NSW Tycoons on Cool Jakey returning to scale. 

“Look it was nice to see him win on a track that wasn’t bottomless wet, it opens up a lot more opportunities for him. 

“In saying that if there was a 1400m for him in a fortnight on a Good track I would probably be reluctant to start him. We need to nurse him through it and the next month – six weeks isn’t going to be easy because it’s carnival time.

WHATS NEXT – PACK YOUR BAGS

The Tycoons have been very patient with Cool Jakey and their patience has been rewarded. He is building a very nice career record which stands at only 13 starts for 5 wins and a minor placing and is now pushing the $200,000 in prize money. 

‘Jakey’ has initially pulled up well, but we all know that he is a delicate soul and has to be treated with kindness and Joe is reluctant to push him too hard too quickly. Which is fair enough. 

“We might even consider travelling him maybe to Melbourne or Brisbane for a wet track, we just need to look after him.

“He’s been a good horse for us, we will look after him and his best opportunities will come in the Winter,” Joe concluded.
