This Weekend In Racing: BIG WET CAUSING HAVOC

It’s been a challenging week across Queensland and New South Wales for participants within the racing industry. 

Horses have needed to be evacuated, meetings canceled while tomorrow’s Doomben meeting has been shifted to Toowoomba. 

There’s two Group 1s at Randwick while Flemington also has a Group 1 in the Australian Guineas this weekend. 

Let’s try and find some winners from our TRL Trainers. 

MAHER & EUSTACE POWER ON

The Ciaron Maher/Dave Eusctace stable has already chalked up 61 winners this season at a strike rate of 18% clearly you’ve got to stick with the strength. 

Playoffs has already been backed from $9 to $7 in Sportsbet’s early markets. It was a good win at Caulfield and was far from disgraced when third last start. 

Sneaky Five is a very good filly, she is a great fresh horse who’s only defeat came when trapped wide in the Manikato Stakes. Super keen on the $7.50 on offer at Sportsbet. 

We all know you should stick solid with a mare in form and Yonce (Race 9) is certainly that.

PRICE & KENT LOOK STRONG

Mick Price and Michael Kent Junior have a terrific record with two year-olds and that looks set to continue at Flemington. 

Wee Neesy is a $400,000 purchase and looked pretty good in winning it’s Cranbourne barrier trial. 

Annavisto, has plenty of class about her and is a great fresh horse winning 2 from 3 first-up and I’m happy to stick.

BUSUTTIN EYES GUINEAS

There’s no forgetting the efforts of the Busuttin/Young trained Forgot You, he was enormous first-up running the fastest 200 meters of the day and the mile of the Australian Guineas should suit perfectly. 

He has also won second-up before.

WAUGH TO RULE THE COURT

The Heavy 10 sign will be up regardless at Royal Randwick and if you are searching for mudlarks look no further than the Kim Waugh trained Bethencourt in the Midway – Race 1.  

A winner on a heavy track last Friday night, he thrives on the surface and I’m happy to take the $6 on offer at Sportsbet.

NEWNHAM TO DO THE DANCE OF THE VEILS 

One of the best back runners in early markets at Randwick has been the Mark Newnham trained Seven Veils in the Reisling Stakes. 

She’s having her second start and has already firmed from $12 to $9 which indicates the stable thinks she’ll get through the ground.

STILL PLENTY OF PRIDE FOR EDUARDO

I know Nature Strip was a certainty beaten after missing the kick in the Lightning where Eduardo finished third, but I reckon Eduardo can emerge victorious in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes which he won last year. 

Eduardo has had 3 starts on Heavy tracks for 2 wins and thrives at Randwick.

FREEDMAN BROTHERS TASTE FORBIDDEN LOVE

Richard and Michael Freedman have nothing but praise for their gallant mare in Forbidden Love, not only do they train it, they bought her and still have a twenty percent share. 

Forbidden Love is very good, give her a heavy track and she gets the giggles, we’ll be cheering from the lounge chair.

HEATHCOTE TO GO DEEP AT TOOWOOMBA

Thoughts to all our trainers and staff who’ve had to cope with the “super storm” which caused havoc in Brisbane this past week and is continuing to do so. 

Rob Heathcote has a good wet tracker in Deep Sceiva in the first race. She’s been smashed by the pros in early Sportsbet markets firming from $7.50 to $4.80 and Rob has always thought she would be primed third-up. 

Prince of Boom is coming back from a throat operation but trialed extremely well and if he can capture his best form looks good value at $5 on Sportsbet.

GOLLAN HAS SOME SHORTIES

Shamrock Lu (Race 10) appears to be the most attractive priced Tony Gollan runner at the Doomben meeting now moved to Toowoomba, his spiritual home but you’ll have to wait till the very last race. 

He’s been great to followers winning his last two, gets through the ground at a good gamble at $7. 

Tony also has first starter Flying Rupert (Race 2) which won its barrier trial by 5 lengths and Knight Mariner (Race 5) which is also very tight in the market and should be hard to beat.

Cool Jakey was the King of Warwick Farm  on Wednesday and NSW Tycoons owners would like to package the Metropolitan track and just take it wherever Cool Jakey goes after he kept his undefeated record intact. 

It’s remarkable that ‘Jakey’, trained on track and stabled across the road with Joe Pride, is one of those athletes, albeit of the equine kind, who thrives on his home ground. 

He won on debut at Warwick Farm way back in February of 2023 and the love affair hasn’t ended, Cool Jakey has now won 4 from 4 at ‘The Farm’ and there’s plenty more wins in store for your son of Pierro.

BOUNCE BACK FACTOR 

As Tycoons were made aware of, there’s a theory in racing that when a horse suffers from cardiac arrhythmia, “you must back it next start” and they win. 

And that was certainly the message after Cool Jakey suffered cardiac arrhythmia the previous start at Randwick, with Joe Pride telling Tycoons in the pre-race late mail, “Don’t worry about what happened last start, the horse is fine and he looks great,” how right Joe was with Cool Jakey leading all the way.

HIPPO FROM BARRIER TO BOX

Adam Hyeronimus was having his first sit on Cool Jakey and he rode him a treat. We joked before the race “just go to the front and improve your position” and that’s exactly what he did. 

“He jumped well and found a nice rhythm straight away, he had a nice time so I let him slide early into it at the 600metres so we did go a bit early. 

“He felt fantastic throughout the run and was doing it easily, so I did get a bit of a surprise how quickly he stopped. 

“So maybe I did go too early, but in saying that, maybe seven furlongs is his upper limit. On that effort he’ll be winning again” Jockey Adam Hyeronimus said.

JOE DELIGHTED

“That was good guys” trainer Joe Pride said, with a big smile to a large contingent of NSW Tycoons on Cool Jakey returning to scale. 

“Look it was nice to see him win on a track that wasn’t bottomless wet, it opens up a lot more opportunities for him. 

“In saying that if there was a 1400m for him in a fortnight on a Good track I would probably be reluctant to start him. We need to nurse him through it and the next month – six weeks isn’t going to be easy because it’s carnival time.

WHATS NEXT – PACK YOUR BAGS

The Tycoons have been very patient with Cool Jakey and their patience has been rewarded. He is building a very nice career record which stands at only 13 starts for 5 wins and a minor placing and is now pushing the $200,000 in prize money. 

‘Jakey’ has initially pulled up well, but we all know that he is a delicate soul and has to be treated with kindness and Joe is reluctant to push him too hard too quickly. Which is fair enough. 

“We might even consider travelling him maybe to Melbourne or Brisbane for a wet track, we just need to look after him.

“He’s been a good horse for us, we will look after him and his best opportunities will come in the Winter,” Joe concluded.
