BELLINGER TO FLY THE FLAG

Bellinger will fly the flag for TRL this weekend when the Vic Husslers descend on Cranbourne for Cup day. 

Arguably Bellinger’s best win came at Cranbourne so fingers crossed for a dry track and a fast pace up front. 

The Big Freeze went oh so close at Moe on Monday, while Sidenay had no luck for the NSW Tycoons when he was posted wide the entire journey on the tight-turning Gosford track. 

The Qld Rogues would have been super impressed with Greglander’s trial on Tuesday morning.

BELLINGER LOVES CRANBOURNE

Trainers Ben and JD Hayes have taken a shine to Bellinger, who’s already notched 3 wins for the Vic Husslers. 

“His work this week has been terrific and while he is effective on all surfaces the likelihood of a dry track is a major plus. It’s a tricky barrier but Micky Dee will work it out,” said JDHayes

Bellinger is up against a tough field, but if there’s pace up front, he’ll be steaming home.

Earlier in the day, Liberty Steps (Race 6) has already been backed from $9 into $7.50.

A HOME GAME FOR PRICE

Training out of their new Cranbourne base Mick Price and Michael Kent Junior have somewhat of a home ground advantage this Saturday. 

Doubling Eye (Race 1) is making its debut and was a strong Randwick trial performer who was very green but did hit the line well. 

In the Cranbourne Cup, Visinari $5 won first-up, is down in class here and is never far away.

CUMANI TO CLIMB NOBLE HEIGHTS

Vic Husslers Trainer Matt Cumani reports that Team Captain continues to do well in the lead up to the Sandown Cup which will actually be run at Caulfield this year. 

At Cranbourne, Nobile Heights (Race 3) needs a firm surface and if the track is Good, this bloke can run a bold race now that he is third-up and rock hard fit.

CIARON AND DAVE LOVE A CARDIGAN

Ciaron Maher actually has a fashion advisor but the boys will be sporting cardigans on Saturday. 

Cardigan Queen (Race 5) has been good to us in the past, she’s pretty good but with her pattern of getting back just needs some luck. 

Calico Jack (Race 4) won last start and looks to be on an upward spiral.

WAUGH AND FRENCH BONNET

It is the start of the Spring standalone meetings in NSW which means a short drive up the highway for NSW Tycoons trainer Kim Waugh. 

Everyone loves a grey and French Bonnet certainly stands out in a crowd. She’s currently $4 and a very nice mare who did well against the boys last start and is unbeaten second-up. So I’m happy to stick.

NEWNHAM IS THE KING

We were happy to be with King Frankel last week at Rosehill but he was scratched at the barriers when he played up last week. 

King Frankel is capable of taking up the lead or being near the lead and should be strong to the line.

GAI IS IN THE CONGO

Gai Waterhouse loves a well deserved holiday but I’m not sure she’s ever been to the Congo. 

But I do know that In The Congo (Race 8) goes well, he’s tough as many of Gai’s runners are, the 1300m should suit dropping back from 1500m last start and he will take advantage of a very good draw and be hard to beat.

JOE PRIDE LURKING IN THE SHADOWS

You’ll need to be patient if you are a supporter of the Joe Pride yard like myself.

Joe has Redwood Shadow (Race 10) $5.50 showed really good fight winning at Warwick Farm is ultra consistent and should allow us to end the day with a smile.

ROB HEATHCOTE HAS A HOT ONE

We are only one week away from the start of the Summer Carnival in Brisbane all leading up to the Magic Millions on January 14 at the Gold Coast. 

Rob Heathcote has a hot hand heading to Doomben. 

Abounding (Race 1) is tight in the market at $1.60 not my odds but looks good and should win. 

Drive A Deel (Race 5) did the right thing by us last start and I’ll be sticking. He’s won his last 3 straight and with a record like that the $2.10 price is justified. 

Extremist (Race 9) is now at $6.50 after initially opening at $9. It’s won all three starts this spell and can make it 4.

GOLLAN FULL OF CONFIDENCE

The Tony Gollan stable has a total of 8 runners at Doomben with 4 in the listed Keith Noud. 

Saweetie (Race 3) she makes good appeal at $6, is drawn well and should get a good run and has a good finishing burst. 

Count Da Beans (Race 6) is now third-up after two runner-up efforts to start the preparation. The dark cloud is that he was beaten as an odds on favourite last start and lines up here at $2.70. 

Salateen (Race 8) is taking on 3 other Gollan runners including the favourite Garibaldi. Salateen makes appeal at $9 from a good draw should be able to camp near the lead and be strong late.

Cool Jakey was the King of Warwick Farm  on Wednesday and NSW Tycoons owners would like to package the Metropolitan track and just take it wherever Cool Jakey goes after he kept his undefeated record intact. 

It’s remarkable that ‘Jakey’, trained on track and stabled across the road with Joe Pride, is one of those athletes, albeit of the equine kind, who thrives on his home ground. 

He won on debut at Warwick Farm way back in February of 2023 and the love affair hasn’t ended, Cool Jakey has now won 4 from 4 at ‘The Farm’ and there’s plenty more wins in store for your son of Pierro.

BOUNCE BACK FACTOR 

As Tycoons were made aware of, there’s a theory in racing that when a horse suffers from cardiac arrhythmia, “you must back it next start” and they win. 

And that was certainly the message after Cool Jakey suffered cardiac arrhythmia the previous start at Randwick, with Joe Pride telling Tycoons in the pre-race late mail, “Don’t worry about what happened last start, the horse is fine and he looks great,” how right Joe was with Cool Jakey leading all the way.

HIPPO FROM BARRIER TO BOX

Adam Hyeronimus was having his first sit on Cool Jakey and he rode him a treat. We joked before the race “just go to the front and improve your position” and that’s exactly what he did. 

“He jumped well and found a nice rhythm straight away, he had a nice time so I let him slide early into it at the 600metres so we did go a bit early. 

“He felt fantastic throughout the run and was doing it easily, so I did get a bit of a surprise how quickly he stopped. 

“So maybe I did go too early, but in saying that, maybe seven furlongs is his upper limit. On that effort he’ll be winning again” Jockey Adam Hyeronimus said.

JOE DELIGHTED

“That was good guys” trainer Joe Pride said, with a big smile to a large contingent of NSW Tycoons on Cool Jakey returning to scale. 

“Look it was nice to see him win on a track that wasn’t bottomless wet, it opens up a lot more opportunities for him. 

“In saying that if there was a 1400m for him in a fortnight on a Good track I would probably be reluctant to start him. We need to nurse him through it and the next month – six weeks isn’t going to be easy because it’s carnival time.

WHATS NEXT – PACK YOUR BAGS

The Tycoons have been very patient with Cool Jakey and their patience has been rewarded. He is building a very nice career record which stands at only 13 starts for 5 wins and a minor placing and is now pushing the $200,000 in prize money. 

‘Jakey’ has initially pulled up well, but we all know that he is a delicate soul and has to be treated with kindness and Joe is reluctant to push him too hard too quickly. Which is fair enough. 

“We might even consider travelling him maybe to Melbourne or Brisbane for a wet track, we just need to look after him.

“He’s been a good horse for us, we will look after him and his best opportunities will come in the Winter,” Joe concluded.
