Bollinger Miss pops the Champagne

Sep 24, 2024

The Qld Rogues had every reason to pop the champagne with Bollinger Miss saluting in the most impressive style at Doomben on Wednesday.

At only her second race start the daughter of emerging sire Zousain defied the barrier Gods to notch a stunning win and confirm what we all thought and that is “The Qld Rogues have a very nice horse on their team.”

TO RUN OR NOT TO RUN

Chris and Corey Munce have always had a good opinion of Bollinger Miss but getting it done under pressure on race day is truly the ultimate test.

Some may have been disappointed at Bollinger Miss’s only previous race start at Eagle Farm back in May when she finished unplaced.

But the Munce team always knew this girl had “an engine”.

So great excitement turned to disappointment when she drew barrier 17 for her return at Doomben on Wednesday.

Don’t worry there was the back-up plan for Ipswich on Thursday, but she drew marble 18 – Yes it’s hard to believe.

GREAT DECISION

The decision to run at Doomben or not was helped with 9 scratchings but still, the Rail was out a massive 11 metres.

Bollinger Miss still had the extreme outside gate but Chris and Corey were convinced “she could still win” and they were right.

“I put my b…s on the line by running but I knew she would run well.” trainer Chris Munce said.

“I chatted with Martin Harley on Wednesday morning and he said run her, I don’t have any problem with the gate and he was right it was a good win” Chris said.

THE RACE ITSELF

Pre-race tactics are important but they often go out the window as soon as the barriers fly back.

From the extreme outside gate, the intention was to use Bollinger Miss’s tactical speed to go forward – the only problem was she was tardy from the barriers.

That didn’t stop jockey Martin Harley who showed great intent to persevere and drive foreward to sit outside the leader.

“It was a good win. I had to use a fair bit of energy early after missing the kick.

“The main thing was I asked her to come back and sit outside the leader. She let down really well then in the straight but you could probably see she was green in the straight but was still good and that’s a sign she will get over more ground.

“She is like her trainer, she’s tough” Martin Harly concluded.

Corey Munce was also all smiles.

“She’s done a fantastic job and lived up to our expectations, still a little green in the run so there’s only more upside to come.”

“You probably saw in the last 100m she actually changed on to the right leg and that’s where she pulled away from the second horse. It was a very good win” Corey said.

THE FILLY HAS PULLED UP GREAT

The great news you filly has pulled up remarkably well after such a tough run.

“She did well overnight and ate up and looks nice and bright this morning (Thursday morning).

“We won’t be in any hurry to get her back to the race, you probably won’t see her for a few weeks. She will go out to the farm and have some time in a paddock.

“But the Rogues have a really nice horse on their hands” Corey said.

BOUNCE BACK FACTOR

As Tycoons were made aware of, there’s a theory in racing that when a horse suffers from cardiac arrhythmia, “you must back it next start” and they win.

And that was certainly the message after Cool Jakey suffered cardiac arrhythmia the previous start at Randwick, with Joe Pride telling Tycoons in the pre-race late mail, “Don’t worry about what happened last start, the horse is fine and he looks great,” how right Joe was with Cool Jakey leading all the way.

HIPPO FROM BARRIER TO BOX

Adam Hyeronimus was having his first sit on Cool Jakey and he rode him a treat. We joked before the race “just go to the front and improve your position” and that’s exactly what he did.

“He jumped well and found a nice rhythm straight away, he had a nice time so I let him slide early into it at the 600metres so we did go a bit early.

“He felt fantastic throughout the run and was doing it easily, so I did get a bit of a surprise how quickly he stopped.

“So maybe I did go too early, but in saying that, maybe seven furlongs is his upper limit. On that effort he’ll be winning again” Jockey Adam Hyeronimus said.

JOE DELIGHTED

“That was good guys” trainer Joe Pride said, with a big smile to a large contingent of NSW Tycoons on Cool Jakey returning to scale.

“Look it was nice to see him win on a track that wasn’t bottomless wet, it opens up a lot more opportunities for him.

“In saying that if there was a 1400m for him in a fortnight on a Good track I would probably be reluctant to start him. We need to nurse him through it and the next month – six weeks isn’t going to be easy because it’s carnival time.

WHATS NEXT – PACK YOUR BAGS

The Tycoons have been very patient with Cool Jakey and their patience has been rewarded. He is building a very nice career record which stands at only 13 starts for 5 wins and a minor placing and is now pushing the $200,000 in prize money.

‘Jakey’ has initially pulled up well, but we all know that he is a delicate soul and has to be treated with kindness and Joe is reluctant to push him too hard too quickly. Which is fair enough.

“We might even consider travelling him maybe to Melbourne or Brisbane for a wet track, we just need to look after him.

“He’s been a good horse for us, we will look after him and his best opportunities will come in the Winter,” Joe concluded.

Congratulations to all NSW Tycoons and winning connections.

Go you good thing!
