For a horse that has spent virtually his entire life in a paddock, Cool Jakey made a stunning debut at the track by winning barrier trial number 10 at Royal Randwick on Monday morning.

A slowly maturing Pierro horse, Cool Jakey has been a work in progress and another youngster who’s just needed time and patient owners. That patience looks like it’s about to pay off.

To be honest he even surprised his trainer Mark Newnham and jockey Josh Parr.

“That was a really positive trial from Cool Jakey on debut,” trainer Mark Newnham said.

“Jockey Josh Parr was impressed with him; he has ridden him a bit in trackwork and also thought he trialed well above expectations,” Newnham added.

“He jumped well it put himself on pace and worked through his gears nicely in the straight.”

Cool Jakey has pulled up well and will have another barrier trial in two weeks before the camp will find a suitable race for him to debut.
