FIRST GROUP 1 OF THE SEASON

FIRST GROUP 1

It’s the first Group 1 of the new season at Randwick with the running of the Winx Stakes and the Godolphin-trained Anamoe is the hot favorite.

Team Captain was set to return at Moonee Valley on Saturday but trainer Matt Cumani has decided to wait one more week and go to the Listed Heatherlie Stakes at Caulfield.

Luna Rocks didn’t accept Saturday’s Silver Shadow Stakes for the NSW Tycoons with Richard and Will Freedman keeping her for Wednesday at Canterbury.

Time to check out the major chances from your trainers this Saturday.

MAHER/EUSTACE RAMP IT UP

Ciaron Maher continues to be happy with the progression of Lethal Thoughts towards next Saturday’s Group 3 Up and Coming Stakes at Rosehill.

At Randwick, I reckon we will get the cash early with Strawberry Rock (Race 2) who’s ready to peak and was good over the 2500m last start.

At Moonee Valley, Mayfair Spirit (Race 6) with Jamie Kah aboard looks ready to win after being placed last start and is now third-up.

Gold Trip (Race 7) is being kept safe at $4.20 with Sportsbet and was touted as a potential Cox Plate chance last year. His run at Rosehill last start was a real eye-catcher.

Bella Nipotina (Race 8) is a dual acceptor and is a Group 2 winner and will be hard to beat at Randwick or Moonee Valley.

KIM WAUGH WITH TWO BIG HOPES

Kim Waugh is slowly stepping up the workload with Sidenay who is set to trial on Monday August 29 at Gosford, we look forward to that.

At Randwick, Buba (Race 3) is a good each way chance, she’s honest and has posted 4 wins and 10 minor placings during a good career.

Conrad (Race 10) is a horse that Kim has always had an opinion of, at double digit odds coming off a win he can go back to back.

MUNCE THE TOAST OF THE ROGUES

Chris Munce has set his sights high with Hot Spring Gold, who’ll have a short campaign before being set for a couple of targets during the Brisbane Winter Carnival.

Chris has traveled south to Randwick with Boomnova (Race 7) she has won her last 4 and certainly deserves a chance here in a nice race. Hopefully Bella Nipotina stays in Melbourne.

GOLLAN MAY WELL VAPORIZE

Tony Gollan reports he is happy with Greylander and how that splint has healed.

At Doomben, Vaporizing (Race 1) is a $6 chance is back in distance, should find a good spot from the draw and charge home.

Knight Mariner (Race 7) $2.60 with Sportsbet has been a costly convenience for punters but does have ability, can win but is short in the market.

Desert Dreamer (Race 9) won first-up has drawn well and should only improve.

O’DEA HITS THE SURF

I’m not too sure if Steve O’Dea has a surfboard on the roof racks but Hang Five (Race 2) looks to be a big chance at Doomben. And that’s what the market say’s at $2.60 with Sportsbet.

There’s only 7 horses in the race, it has to carry 59kgs, does get back in the field but possesses a good finish.

BET: Hang Five (Doomben Race 2)

HEATHCOTE NOW HAS YOUR FILLY

Your Capitalist x Our Pride and Joy filly has now joined The Big Goodbye in the Rob Heathcote stable.

Deep Sceiva (Race 5) has been heavily backed from $9 to $7.50 with Sportsbet. Angela Jones has the ride with the 3kgs claim to come in handy.

Sir Rocket (Race 8) has also been well supported $7.50 to $6, raced well in the Ramornie and was unlucky last start.

RAIN IS PREDICTED FOR THE VALLEY BUT WHO KNOWS

The weather bureau is predicting heavy rain for Moonee Valley but they made the same claim last week only for the storms to skirt around Caulfield.

Mick Price and Michael Kent Junior have Denied (Race 1) at the attractive odds of $6.50, it’s only had 2 starts for a win and a second placing. Can win again.

BET: Denied – Each Way (MV Race 1)

BUSUTTIN TO STRIKE EARLY

We may be able to get some cash early at the Valley with the Busuttin stable that has Forgot You (Race 3) returning. It won a jump out at Sale, has raced at a very high level and this is a drop back in grade.

BET: Forgot You – Each Way (MV Race 3)

HAYES STILL CELEBRATING

Congrats to Ben and JD Hayes for their victory with Mr Brightside last week.

At Moonee Valley, I reckon they can keep the winning momentum going with Mimi’s Award (Race 4). She’s a $5.50 chance takes the 3kg claim courtesy of Laura Lafferty and hasn’t missed a place in four starts.

BET: Mimi’s Award – Each Way (MV Race 4)

Good luck and good punting.

FIRST GROUP 1 OF THE SEASON

Aug 19, 2022

Cool Jakey was the King of Warwick Farm  on Wednesday and NSW Tycoons owners would like to package the Metropolitan track and just take it wherever Cool Jakey goes after he kept his undefeated record intact.

It’s remarkable that ‘Jakey’, trained on track and stabled across the road with Joe Pride, is one of those athletes, albeit of the equine kind, who thrives on his home ground.

He won on debut at Warwick Farm way back in February of 2023 and the love affair hasn’t ended, Cool Jakey has now won 4 from 4 at ‘The Farm’ and there’s plenty more wins in store for your son of Pierro.

BOUNCE BACK FACTOR

As Tycoons were made aware of, there’s a theory in racing that when a horse suffers from cardiac arrhythmia, “you must back it next start” and they win.

And that was certainly the message after Cool Jakey suffered cardiac arrhythmia the previous start at Randwick, with Joe Pride telling Tycoons in the pre-race late mail, “Don’t worry about what happened last start, the horse is fine and he looks great,” how right Joe was with Cool Jakey leading all the way.

HIPPO FROM BARRIER TO BOX

Adam Hyeronimus was having his first sit on Cool Jakey and he rode him a treat. We joked before the race “just go to the front and improve your position” and that’s exactly what he did.

“He jumped well and found a nice rhythm straight away, he had a nice time so I let him slide early into it at the 600metres so we did go a bit early.

“He felt fantastic throughout the run and was doing it easily, so I did get a bit of a surprise how quickly he stopped.

“So maybe I did go too early, but in saying that, maybe seven furlongs is his upper limit. On that effort he’ll be winning again” Jockey Adam Hyeronimus said.

JOE DELIGHTED

“That was good guys” trainer Joe Pride said, with a big smile to a large contingent of NSW Tycoons on Cool Jakey returning to scale.

“Look it was nice to see him win on a track that wasn’t bottomless wet, it opens up a lot more opportunities for him.

“In saying that if there was a 1400m for him in a fortnight on a Good track I would probably be reluctant to start him. We need to nurse him through it and the next month – six weeks isn’t going to be easy because it’s carnival time.

WHATS NEXT – PACK YOUR BAGS

The Tycoons have been very patient with Cool Jakey and their patience has been rewarded. He is building a very nice career record which stands at only 13 starts for 5 wins and a minor placing and is now pushing the $200,000 in prize money.

‘Jakey’ has initially pulled up well, but we all know that he is a delicate soul and has to be treated with kindness and Joe is reluctant to push him too hard too quickly. Which is fair enough.

“We might even consider travelling him maybe to Melbourne or Brisbane for a wet track, we just need to look after him.

“He’s been a good horse for us, we will look after him and his best opportunities will come in the Winter,” Joe concluded.

Congratulations to all NSW Tycoons and winning connections.

Go you good thing!
