The Story Behind The Racing League’s Stable Names

May 26, 2021

Owners love the stable names for their racehorses. It allows them to get connected to their horses before an official name is chosen and can also give them a unique little insight to their thoroughbred’s personality.

With The Racing League purchasing nine horses at the 2021 Gold Coast Magic Millions, and a further three horses purchased at the Easter Inglis Sales we sat down with Shannon Betts, Owner and Founder of Emeran Park, to talk through the stable names of the current Racing Leagues’ horses.

The Racing League purchases premium thoroughbreds at Australia’s best auctions, matches them up with the nation’s best trainers and gives Australians the best ownership experience for an affordable price. You can own your share in one of the four teams for $200 plus a monthly fee of $20 for your first unit ($5 for any additional units).

While often the stable name can reflect the personality of a horse, Shannon says that it’s not as big as a process as people often imagine.

“I’d like to be able to say we sat down and came up with some very deep and meaningful back stories for all our stable names but quite often they’re what just pops into our head,” explained Shannon.

“Usually it’s something that develops from their name because everyone starts saying ‘oh can someone go grab the Rubick filly from the paddock’ and then you start making something of it, or something pops into your head and the next thing you know, it’s stuck.

“It’s a very organic process.”

So, what names have some of your yearlings been given so far? It’s time to find out…

NSW

Cathy: Hellbent x Fimantino. This filly has legs for days and she can eat up the track with them. Makes you think of the incredible Australian sprinter Cathy Freeman and that magic win in the Olympics on home turf. Will we see another magical run from this Cathy?

Tonka: Headwater x Pfeiffer. This filly is ready to mix it with the boys and let’s face it bulldoze them. This girl is built like a truck and what better truck that Tonka

Rocket: Star Turn x Blitz ‘n’ Magic. Talk about fast out, this colt is a sleek rocket in the paddock, on the track and in the yard. Watch out

The Sherpa: Mikki Isle x Alpine Explorer. Not a stable name but how apt, the first TRL horse to hit the track was carrying a weight of expectation and did not disappoint

QLD

Kevin: Fastnet Rock x Alice Island. Such a beautiful horse it’s almost a shame to call him Kevin but sometimes you have to listen to what everyone wants – a grey called Kevin

Snickers: Hellbent x Queen of Kandy. Would you like nuts with that? This colt has his fair share of nuttiness and snickers is everyone’s favourite nutty chocolate

Cruise: Flying Artie x Laylia. Tom or laidback? Take your pick. This colt is cool as Tom and leads the boys in the paddock yet knows how to relax into everything he does

Princess: I Am Invincible x Unequivocal. With such impeccable breeding this filly is every bit the princess and she just holds her head as if she was waving to her adoring fans

VIC

Flipper: Pride of Dubai x Just Add Water. Talk about a noisy fella, this colt needs to tell you everything he is thinking out loud. In his first day in education he whinnied from the moment he entered the yard reminding everyone of flipper

Terry: So You Think x St Remy. Named after an inquisitive member of the TRL team, journalist Terry Kennedy. This colt wants to check in on everything like every great journalist does

Apache: Written Tycoon x Tornado Miss. With a distinctive blaze and a piercing eye this colt stares down his enemy like a true Indian

You can purchase your share in a six horse racing team for only $200 a unit (cost price with no mark-up) plus a monthly fee of $20 ($5 for additional shares purchased in the same team) to cover training, insurance, admin, vet fees etc.
