This Weekend in Racing: All eyes on Ballarat

Nov 19, 2021

By Terry Kennedy

No runners this weekend for The Racing League before things heat up next week. The Qld Rogues will have three horses hitting the track The Big Goodbye, Hot Spring Gold and two-year-old Maroon Magic. It looks like Matt Cumani is leaning towards the $300,000 Pakenham Cup (Dec 4) with Team Captain. For the NSW Tycoons Penso A Lei turned in a terrific first-up fourth over an unsuitable 1200m at Wyong last Tuesday and will now step up in distance to 1400m on Wednesday week at Warwick Farm before progressing to a mile race.

Let’s try and find a winner from our TRL trainers.

BALLARAT’S TURN TO SHINE

The forecast is for clear skies for Ballarat Cup day being the feature meeting in Victoria on Saturday. No big surprise that the Ciaron Maher/Dave Eustace yard has chances in most races. In the Cup (Race 8) Thought Of That deserves to be the favourtie, he’s won his last three and simply goes to the front and holds off all challengers. Seiners Express (Race 9) has come up with a horror barrier 15, but is very smart. He’ll need luck from out there but has form around I’m Thunderstruck and has been well supported at $4.80 on Sportsbet. I’m tipping the stable to also win the last with Marine One (Race 10) who won it’s previous two starts before finding the Coolmore way too hot.

BET:  Thought Of That – Win (Melb Race 8)

BET:  Seiners Express – Each Way (Melb  Race 9

BET: Marine One – WIN (Melb Race 10)

PRICE TO FLY THE BARRIERS

Set the alarm clock because the training combination of Mick Price and Michael Kent Junior are set to strike early at Ballarat. Kurabui (Race 1) is well found at $2.70 on Sportsbet, but has only lost one of her starts and that was a luckless effort at Flemington, stick with her. Sunfall (Race 2) has looked good in winning at both Geelong and Flemington and makes appeal at $11 Sportsbet.

BET: Surabui – Win (Ballarat  Race 1)

BET: Sunfall – Each Way (Ballarat Race 2)

BUSUTTIN TO HAVE A BALLARAT BLAST

It could also be a very good day for another Vic Husslers trainer combo in Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young. Cusack (Race 3) is a first start for the stable who looked pretty good at the jump outs but will need a slice of luck from barrier 11. Magnajet (Race 6) has been runner-up at it’s last two starts and is coming out of some good form races. Rich Hips (Syd Race 8) has been sent to Sydney for the Gong after her super impressive win on Cup Day at Flemington, she’s been easy in the market will have to run the mile but happy to stick at big odds.

BET: Cusack – Each Way (Ballarat Race 3)

BET: Magnajet – Each Way (Ballarat Race 6)

BET: Rich Hips – Each Way (Kembla Race 8)

JOE PRIDE AT ODDS

NSW Tycoons trainer Joe Pride is having a terrific run and we are sticking with him with at Kembla Grange. Joe has two horses Brutality $18 and Zoushack $8.50 both in Race 9,  both are capable of winning. Zoushack has been in spectacular form for the miRunners group, will go forward and if allowed to roll along will give you a tremendous sight.

BET: Zoushack – Each Way (Kemba Race 9)

KIM WAUGH IN FORM

Kim Waugh stable is in a real purple patch of form with winners during the week and now Oxford Tycoon (Race 10) extremely well supported firming in to $5.50 at Sportsbet. He wasn’t himself when disappointing earlier this preparation but looked a happy horse beating up inferior opposition last start at Wyong.

Bet: Oxford Tycoon – Each Way (Kembla Race 10)

GOLLAN ARMY TAKE OVER SUNSHINE COAST

It’s the official start to the Summer Carnival in Queensland kicking off with the Mooloolaba Cup at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday. Eight time premiership winning trainer Tony Gollan has 14 runners at the meeting. According to Tony his best is Honey Pot (Race 1) “she’s a filly I really like and I think she’s my bst of the day”. Gollan has 4 runners in Race 6 but when pushed “I’ve got to put Refero on top, he never let down at Eagle Farm on that track but I like him here” Gollan said. Zoustyle (Race 7) “Is the best of my four runners in Race 7 and should be too good for them”. Gollan said.

BET: Honey Pot – Win (Sunny Coast Race 1)

BET: Refero – Each Way (Sunny Coast Race 6)

BET: Zoustyle – Win (Sunny Coast Race 7)

TOBY AND TRENT EDMONDS FIND FORM

Qld Rogues owners Toby and Trent Edmonds head up the highway to the Sunshine Coast with a couple of ripping chances. Xerri (Race 2) has been smashed in early markets on Sportsbet, fitness told against her first-up at the Gold Coast and the big long straight of the Sunny Coast should suit.  Smooth Move (Race 6) ticks alot of boxes, he looked good winning at the Gold Coast and races well at this circuit.

BET: Xerri – Win (Sunny Coast  Race 2)

BET: Smooth Move (Sunny Coast Race 6)
