This Weekend in Racing: Eagle (Farm) Rock

May 27, 2021

The famous racehorse ownership roller coaster was in full swing this week with the NSW Tycoons sending The Sherpa into enemy territory for a midweek raid at Doomben in Brisbane. It wasn’t quite the result (5th) we wanted, but The Sherpa has pulled up well after “grabbing the bit and taking off in a lightning speed battle, we’ll head home now to Scone with a nice horse that will provide plenty of thrills for the owners” said Brett Cavanough.

Eagle Farm – Winter Heats Up

This weekend’s racing spotlight is certainly on Brisbane with the carnival switching from Doomben to Eagle Farm for the running of the Kingsford Smith Cup and the Queensland Derby among other stunning races. Queensland Rogues trainer Tony Gollan has a three pronged attack in the Kingsford Smith (Race 8) with Jonker, Outback Barbie and Vega One. “Jonker will go forward, Vega One is awkwardly drawn but has Jamie Kah on board, he’s best work was on Tuesday morning and I reckon he’ll run really well for Jamie” said Gollan

Tony’s thoughts on his other key runners:

Snitch –  Race 2: “Races well at Eagle Farm, but is getting older and may be better later in the preparation”.

Tiger Heart – Sires Produce (Race 6)  “Tiger Heart is coming off two wins, worked great on Tuesday and I like him”

Palladas  – Race 3 “Loves Eagle Farm, is at big odds but should run well, if he causes a boilover we’d go to the Straddy”

Socialising -Race 9 “Thought she was brilliant in getting beat the other day, I rate her a good chance”

MARK NEWNHAM – STRONG HAND

NSW Tycoons trainer Mark Newnham is confident that Marway can go back to back when he lines up in Race 6 at Royal Randwick this Saturday. Marway was fantastic in winning the Town Plate over the Wagga Wagga carnival last start and is dropping back to 1100m. “It was a great win in the Town Plate and the horse has done well since and should be hard to beat” said Newnham. Mark also rates Spirit Ridge at Eagle Farm (Race 5 ) “He’s done well since Gosford and stepping up to the mile should suit”.

BET: Marway – WIN (Randwick)

DABERNIG HAS CONCERNS OVER BARRIER DRAW

Tom Dabernig’s time as part of the Lindsay Park team is drawing to a close but he’s determined to go out a winner before going out on his own. Lindsay Park has two key runners on Saturday split between Eagle Farm and Caulfield. Warhorse So Si Bonn will be ridden by the always in-form Craig Willams in the Kingsford Smith Stakes (Race 8) at Eagle Farm. “You’d normally be happy with drawing barrier 3, but So Si Bonn will get back and need some luck, regardless he’s on target for the Straddy” said Dabernig. “The Stables’ best chance on Saturday would be Biometric at Caulfield (Race 5) who’s been racing well, might need a little bit of luck from barrier 1, but should finish in the money” added Dabernig.

BET: Biometric – Each Way (Caulfield)

BELMONT

Our WA Black Heart owners are now back for week two of winter racing at Belmont which is just a stones throw from the CBD and even closer to Optus Stadium and the Crown complex. Leading trainer Adam Durrant has some great value chances in the Belmont Sprint (Race 8). Money Matters surprised many with a gutsy win in the Roma Cup, camping up on the speed and fighting off all challenges. While Massimo has been racing without any luck, in particular last start in the Roma Cup where he was blocked for a run and still hasn’t got out.

BET: Massimo – Eachway

This Weekend in Racing: Eagle (Farm) Rock

Cool Jakey was the King of Warwick Farm  on Wednesday and NSW Tycoons owners would like to package the Metropolitan track and just take it wherever Cool Jakey goes after he kept his undefeated record intact.

It’s remarkable that ‘Jakey’, trained on track and stabled across the road with Joe Pride, is one of those athletes, albeit of the equine kind, who thrives on his home ground.

He won on debut at Warwick Farm way back in February of 2023 and the love affair hasn’t ended, Cool Jakey has now won 4 from 4 at ‘The Farm’ and there’s plenty more wins in store for your son of Pierro.

BOUNCE BACK FACTOR

As Tycoons were made aware of, there’s a theory in racing that when a horse suffers from cardiac arrhythmia, “you must back it next start” and they win.

And that was certainly the message after Cool Jakey suffered cardiac arrhythmia the previous start at Randwick, with Joe Pride telling Tycoons in the pre-race late mail, “Don’t worry about what happened last start, the horse is fine and he looks great,” how right Joe was with Cool Jakey leading all the way.

HIPPO FROM BARRIER TO BOX

Adam Hyeronimus was having his first sit on Cool Jakey and he rode him a treat. We joked before the race “just go to the front and improve your position” and that’s exactly what he did.

“He jumped well and found a nice rhythm straight away, he had a nice time so I let him slide early into it at the 600metres so we did go a bit early.

“He felt fantastic throughout the run and was doing it easily, so I did get a bit of a surprise how quickly he stopped.

“So maybe I did go too early, but in saying that, maybe seven furlongs is his upper limit. On that effort he’ll be winning again” Jockey Adam Hyeronimus said.

JOE DELIGHTED

“That was good guys” trainer Joe Pride said, with a big smile to a large contingent of NSW Tycoons on Cool Jakey returning to scale.

“Look it was nice to see him win on a track that wasn’t bottomless wet, it opens up a lot more opportunities for him.

“In saying that if there was a 1400m for him in a fortnight on a Good track I would probably be reluctant to start him. We need to nurse him through it and the next month – six weeks isn’t going to be easy because it’s carnival time.

WHATS NEXT – PACK YOUR BAGS

The Tycoons have been very patient with Cool Jakey and their patience has been rewarded. He is building a very nice career record which stands at only 13 starts for 5 wins and a minor placing and is now pushing the $200,000 in prize money.

‘Jakey’ has initially pulled up well, but we all know that he is a delicate soul and has to be treated with kindness and Joe is reluctant to push him too hard too quickly. Which is fair enough.

“We might even consider travelling him maybe to Melbourne or Brisbane for a wet track, we just need to look after him.

“He’s been a good horse for us, we will look after him and his best opportunities will come in the Winter,” Joe concluded.

Congratulations to all NSW Tycoons and winning connections.

Go you good thing!
