This Weekend in Racing: Super Saturday

Mar 5, 2021

It’s dubbed “Super Saturday” for good reason.

It’s a matter of “where to look” with an incredible amount of Group 1 racing across Flemington and Royal Randwick.

FABULOUS FLEMINGTON

I hate going the “early crow” but the Vic Husslers training combination of Tom Dabernig and Ben Hayes could be in for an unforgettable day at Flemington with a stack of key runners highlighted by Fifty Stars in the Group 1 Australian Cup (Race 8). Fifty Stars, won this race last year,  has had two runs this campaign and is now fully fit after storming home last start for a terrific second in the Blamey Stakes. He loves Flemington and at around that $4.50 quote looks great value.

Bet: Fifty Stars to win

IT’S PERSONAL

Owners in the Queensland Rogues should take great interest in the Group 3 Kewney Stakes (Race 9) at Flemington on Saturday. The Fastnet Rock filly Personal lines up in the Kewney as favourite and is from the all powerful Dabernig/Hayes stable.

Fastnet Rock is not only one of the world’s great sires, but also versatile – producing champion sprinters and stayers, Personal actually won the VRC Oaks (2500m) last Spring. The Queensland Rogues owners drafted the Fastnet Rock/Alice Island grey colt into their team and he’s been all business during the breaking-in process.

TRL TRAINERS IN SLIPPER CLASH – Royal Randwick

There’s no more in-form stable than Michael and Richard Freedman who’ll represent the NSW Tycoons in The Racing League. And this weekend they’ll take on the Vic Husslers Mick Price/Michael Kent Jnr when their star two-year-old colts clash in the Todman Stakes.

Stay Inside, trained by the Freedman’s takes on Profiteer who’s prepared by the Price/Kent Jnr team. Stay Inside and Profiteer are currently undefeated, obviously that will change on Saturday and currently bookmakers have them equal favourites for the Todman.

Michael Freedman believes Stay Inside has thrived since his last start win and will again appreciate the sting out of the ground. They’ll be wary of the other star two-year-old Remarque, who opened at juicy odds and was quickly crunched by the early shoppers into a clear third pick.

TIP. Whoever wins the Todman stick with it in the Golden Slipper in two weeks time.

BEAUTY CHALLENGE

Written Tycoon has taken the breeding world by storm and continues to produce high class winners like Written Beauty, who’ll be tested against some of the country’s best sprinters in Saturday’s Challenge Stakes (1000m) at Randwick.

Written Beauty has won five of her six starts, was unbeaten last preparation but will need to keep improving to beat the likes of Nature Strip who appears to have a stranglehold on the race. Queensland Rogues owners will be cheering for Written Beauty after they picked up the precocious Written Tycoon/Tornado Miss colt in January’s TRL Draft.

BUNBURY CUP DAY

There’ll be a few WA Black Heart owners making the road trip on Saturday to Bunbury Cup Day with a total of three listed races on the program and the Cup worth an attractive $120,000.

TRL trainers will be to the fore on the day, Ben and Dan Pearce have a great chance with Dig Deep in the listed Bunbury Stakes (Race 8) . Dig Deep was terrific winning at Ascot two starts back and with a little luck from gate 9 in a big field should be in the finish. Black Hearts’ trainer Todd Harvey presents the unbeaten Triple Missile in the listed Breeders Classic (Race 6). Todd has a big opinion of this horse and believes he can win again.

EAGLE FARM

We are going to stick with Qld Rogues trainer Chris Anderson who delivered for followers last week when we tipped Gemelon Bolt which duly saluted at the Sunshine Coast. Anderson prepares Hallowed Girl, who’s looking to make it three straight wins when she steps out in the Cascade Plate (Race 7) at Eagle Farm on Saturday. Try and catch the video of Hallowed Girl’s last start win…I’m sure you’ll be impressed it was ridiculously easy with Larry Cassidy all smiles easing down to the line after sitting near last and storming home. At around that $6.50 quote Hallowed Girl looks to be a great play.

BET: Hallowed Girl

You can join Chris Anderson, along with the likes of Gollan and Heathcote train your horses for just $200.

This Weekend in Racing: Super Saturday

Mar 5, 2021

Cool Jakey was the King of Warwick Farm  on Wednesday and NSW Tycoons owners would like to package the Metropolitan track and just take it wherever Cool Jakey goes after he kept his undefeated record intact.

It’s remarkable that ‘Jakey’, trained on track and stabled across the road with Joe Pride, is one of those athletes, albeit of the equine kind, who thrives on his home ground.

He won on debut at Warwick Farm way back in February of 2023 and the love affair hasn’t ended, Cool Jakey has now won 4 from 4 at ‘The Farm’ and there’s plenty more wins in store for your son of Pierro.

BOUNCE BACK FACTOR

As Tycoons were made aware of, there’s a theory in racing that when a horse suffers from cardiac arrhythmia, “you must back it next start” and they win.

And that was certainly the message after Cool Jakey suffered cardiac arrhythmia the previous start at Randwick, with Joe Pride telling Tycoons in the pre-race late mail, “Don’t worry about what happened last start, the horse is fine and he looks great,” how right Joe was with Cool Jakey leading all the way.

HIPPO FROM BARRIER TO BOX

Adam Hyeronimus was having his first sit on Cool Jakey and he rode him a treat. We joked before the race “just go to the front and improve your position” and that’s exactly what he did.

“He jumped well and found a nice rhythm straight away, he had a nice time so I let him slide early into it at the 600metres so we did go a bit early.

“He felt fantastic throughout the run and was doing it easily, so I did get a bit of a surprise how quickly he stopped.

“So maybe I did go too early, but in saying that, maybe seven furlongs is his upper limit. On that effort he’ll be winning again” Jockey Adam Hyeronimus said.

JOE DELIGHTED

“That was good guys” trainer Joe Pride said, with a big smile to a large contingent of NSW Tycoons on Cool Jakey returning to scale.

“Look it was nice to see him win on a track that wasn’t bottomless wet, it opens up a lot more opportunities for him.

“In saying that if there was a 1400m for him in a fortnight on a Good track I would probably be reluctant to start him. We need to nurse him through it and the next month – six weeks isn’t going to be easy because it’s carnival time.

WHATS NEXT – PACK YOUR BAGS

The Tycoons have been very patient with Cool Jakey and their patience has been rewarded. He is building a very nice career record which stands at only 13 starts for 5 wins and a minor placing and is now pushing the $200,000 in prize money.

‘Jakey’ has initially pulled up well, but we all know that he is a delicate soul and has to be treated with kindness and Joe is reluctant to push him too hard too quickly. Which is fair enough.

“We might even consider travelling him maybe to Melbourne or Brisbane for a wet track, we just need to look after him.

“He’s been a good horse for us, we will look after him and his best opportunities will come in the Winter,” Joe concluded.

Congratulations to all NSW Tycoons and winning connections.

Go you good thing!
