This Weekend in Racing: The Countdown to Christmas

Dec 17, 2021

Looking forward to filling up the Christmas stockings with some winners from our TRL trainers this Saturday. No TRL horses in action this weekend but don’t forget about Penso a Lei for the NSW Tycoons on Boxing Day at Randwick. While the Vic Husslers have a great chance to jump to the lead or at least narrow it on TRL Ladder with Bellinger on January 5 at Sandown.

Let’s take a closer look and find a winner from our TRL trainers.

HEATWAVE – LAVISH GIRL A HOT TIP

With heatwave conditions predicted across the Eastern Seaboard the big wet now seems like ancient history. The rail is out 3metres at Flemington with the track a Good 4. The Maher-Eustace stable should get off to a flying start with Lavish Girl (Race 1) well supported at $4.20 on Sportsbet. This is a drop in class for Lavish Girl and now back against her own sex will be strong. High Emocean (Race 3) has been freshened for this after a nine week break and looks the one. The Gauch (Race 7) seems well in at the weights here, is super consistent and will give you an almighty sight. At Randwick, the Vic Husslers training pair also have Easy Single (Race 10) in the last race. It’s already been picked off in the early Sportsbet markets at $7 and will be worth the wait.

BET: Lavish Girl – Each Way  (Flemington Race 1)

BET: High Emocean – Each Way (Flemington Race 3)

BET: The Gauch – Each Way (Flemington Race 7)

BET: Easy Single – Each Way (Randwick Race 10)

MICK PRICE TO LEAD A MERRY “DANCE”

Vic Husslers owners will be hoping for Mick Price to bring the best out of Tavidance (Race 6) at Flemington. Tavidance hasn’t had a lot of luck in his two runs this preparation but has more than enough talent to win this and at $5 on Sportsbet looks a secure each way play.

BET: Tavidance – Each Way (Flemington Race 6)

HAYES BROTHERS TO CONTINUE THE RAGE

Vic Husslers training duo Ben and JD Hayes are enjoying a strong end to the year and long may it continue. Don’t let Gentleman Roy (Race 6) sneak under your radar, he’s already been hammered on Sportsbet firming from $11 into $8.50. He’s coming off a great win first-up and rarely runs a bad race. Get on.

BET: Gentleman Roy – Each Way (Flemington Race 6)

GAI WATERHOUSE TO POP THE CORK

Like most in racing NSW Tycoons trainer Gai Waterhouse doesn’t mind a quiet drink to celebrate a win and the first lady of racing could be popping the cork early with Uncorked (Race 1) at Randwick. Uncorked has already been smashed into a $1.90 at Sportsbet with the big prize a place in the Magic Millions finale.

BET: Uncorked  – Win (Randwick Race 1)

JOE PRIDE ON FIRE

We seem to say this a lot but “how good is Joe Pride going” he won the Villiers last week and don’t forget he will be starting Penso a Lei on Boxing Day at Randwick for the NSW Tycoons. You’ll have to be patient tomorrow at Randwick, Joe has De Grawin (Race 10) in the last race, she’s first up has a bad barrier but plenty of talent and is a knock-out hope.

BET: De Grawin – Each Way  (Randwick Race 10)

MUNCE ON THE CHARGE

Little bit disappointed that Chris Munce has been forced to spell Hot Spring Gold for the Queensland Rogues but rest assured he’s a very nice horse for next year. Muncie has three great chances at Eagle Farm. Race 3 – Jetty – $6.50 gets back in his races but charges home and repeats his last start win from the Sunshine Coast. Race 7 – Rhapsody Rose $3.60 has won her two starts this campaign, sits up on the pace and proves extremely hard to get past. Race 8 -Stampe $6 is now rock hard fit, will make his own luck and give a big kick.

BET: Jetty – Each Way (Race 3 Eagle Farm)

BET: Rhapsody Rose – Win (Race 7 Eagle Farm)

BET: Stampe – Each Way (Race 8 Eagle Farm)

GOLLAN HANDS OUT A WARNING

Good news for Qld Rogue’s owners that the Tony Gollan trained Greylander has commenced pre-training after a good spell up north. Tony has made Purroni (race 2) his best bet from the stable although it’s a horse that has never won at Eagle Farm maybe that’s why she is at $5.50 with Sportsbet. While another horse that has never won at the farm, is Tony’s best each way chance in Tiger Heart (Race 7).

BET: Purroni – Win (Race 2 Eagle Farm)

This Weekend in Racing: The Countdown to Christmas

Dec 17, 2021

Cool Jakey was the King of Warwick Farm  on Wednesday and NSW Tycoons owners would like to package the Metropolitan track and just take it wherever Cool Jakey goes after he kept his undefeated record intact.

It’s remarkable that ‘Jakey’, trained on track and stabled across the road with Joe Pride, is one of those athletes, albeit of the equine kind, who thrives on his home ground.

He won on debut at Warwick Farm way back in February of 2023 and the love affair hasn’t ended, Cool Jakey has now won 4 from 4 at ‘The Farm’ and there’s plenty more wins in store for your son of Pierro.

BOUNCE BACK FACTOR

As Tycoons were made aware of, there’s a theory in racing that when a horse suffers from cardiac arrhythmia, “you must back it next start” and they win.

And that was certainly the message after Cool Jakey suffered cardiac arrhythmia the previous start at Randwick, with Joe Pride telling Tycoons in the pre-race late mail, “Don’t worry about what happened last start, the horse is fine and he looks great,” how right Joe was with Cool Jakey leading all the way.

HIPPO FROM BARRIER TO BOX

Adam Hyeronimus was having his first sit on Cool Jakey and he rode him a treat. We joked before the race “just go to the front and improve your position” and that’s exactly what he did.

“He jumped well and found a nice rhythm straight away, he had a nice time so I let him slide early into it at the 600metres so we did go a bit early.

“He felt fantastic throughout the run and was doing it easily, so I did get a bit of a surprise how quickly he stopped.

“So maybe I did go too early, but in saying that, maybe seven furlongs is his upper limit. On that effort he’ll be winning again” Jockey Adam Hyeronimus said.

JOE DELIGHTED

“That was good guys” trainer Joe Pride said, with a big smile to a large contingent of NSW Tycoons on Cool Jakey returning to scale.

“Look it was nice to see him win on a track that wasn’t bottomless wet, it opens up a lot more opportunities for him.

“In saying that if there was a 1400m for him in a fortnight on a Good track I would probably be reluctant to start him. We need to nurse him through it and the next month – six weeks isn’t going to be easy because it’s carnival time.

WHATS NEXT – PACK YOUR BAGS

The Tycoons have been very patient with Cool Jakey and their patience has been rewarded. He is building a very nice career record which stands at only 13 starts for 5 wins and a minor placing and is now pushing the $200,000 in prize money.

‘Jakey’ has initially pulled up well, but we all know that he is a delicate soul and has to be treated with kindness and Joe is reluctant to push him too hard too quickly. Which is fair enough.

“We might even consider travelling him maybe to Melbourne or Brisbane for a wet track, we just need to look after him.

“He’s been a good horse for us, we will look after him and his best opportunities will come in the Winter,” Joe concluded.

Congratulations to all NSW Tycoons and winning connections.

Go you good thing!
