This Weekend in Racing: Welcome in The New Year

Jan 7, 2022

By Terry Kennedy

To all our TRL owners a massive Happy New Year and we trust you are somehow dodging the Covid dramas while cheering home some winners at the track. The festive season has been relatively quiet for TRL runners. Bellinger was desperately unlucky in finishing fourth at Sandown last Wednesday, when he simply got too far back before storming home. While the NSW Tycoons Penso a Lei disappointed at Wyong on December 31, but trainer Joe Pride, knows Penny is better than that and is now targeting a race at Kembla Grange on Saturday week.

COSTA TO STAR AT HOME

January is Magic Millions time and with the racing world starting to gather on the Gold Coast the Southport track hosts the major meeting in Queensland. It also happens to be the home track of Qld Rogues trainer Michael Costa who has a strong team entered. Manhood (Race 1) won his maiden impressively for Costa, has barrier three, should get the run of the race and at $2 with Sportsbet is a dominant favourite. Sir Rocket (Race 2) has won three starts this preparation, charged home last start when he just missed and has already been backed into red figures on Sportsbet.

NEW YEAR MORE WINNERS FOR GOLLAN

A couple of Stakes winners for Tony Gollan last weekend and he takes a massive 11 runners to the Gold Coast this Saturday. Tony’s best each way chance is Honeypot (Race 4). At her debut she was reared and was left in the barriers before storming home to be the best of good things beaten. Palladas (Race 6) was one of the star track workers for Tony on Tuesday morning. He was trapped wide last start, is extremely well weighted and while well found at $3 on Sportsbet is the one to beat. While most of Tony’s runners don’t want the rain, Glitter Strip (Race 9) is one that improves dramatically on a soft track. Happy to be on at $6 on Sportsbet. At Rosehill, Tony has declared Garibaldi (Race 10) his best bet of the weekend, with one proviso he needs a firm track and there are showers predicted for late on Saturday.

Check out Tony’s thoughts on all his runners by clicking here.

CHRIS MUNCE FLYING START

Chris Munce had a great affinity with the Gold Coast track as a jockey and now he’s making his mark as a trainer. The Munce trained Boomnova (Race 5) has been rock solid at $3.20 with Sportsbet. He hasn’t missed a place this campaign, will go forward make his own luck and at the Gold Coast that’s crucial.

BET: Boomnova – Win (Gold Coast Race 5)

GAI NEVER STOPS

Judging by her social media posts, Gai Waterhouse has just about inspected every yearling going under the hammer at the Magic Millions. Gai and co-trainer Adrian Bott have two good chances at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday. Twilight Affair (Race 6) $6.50 has only had two career starts for a win and a second, that’s pretty impressive. Like most of Gai’s she will go forward and the others will find it hard to get past. Nothinsweetaboutme (Race 9) is at the most attractive odds of $12 with Sportsbet. Niffler is the favourite but Nothinsweetaboutme has won two of her last three and looks to be on the upward spiral.

KIM WAUGH TO REIGN

Nsw Tycoons trainer Kim Waugh certainly delivered us some nice price winners during 2021, we hope that trend continues this year. Kim has Holy Reign tackling this Saturday’s Midway Handicap, the 1400m suits perfectly and has won second-up in two previous preps.

BET: Holy Reign – Each Way (Rosehill Race 4)

HAYES DUO KICKING BUTT

The Hayes training duo of Ben and JD Hayes are making their mark and it looks set to continue at Caulfield this Saturday. Lunar Cat (Race 3) clashes again with Lavish Girl, but on this occasion there’s a 4kg swing in favour of Lunar Cat, that makes the $6 on offer look attractive. Dark Dream (Race 6) just got too far back last start before flying home for a great second, with a touch of luck and a firm track it can go one better.

MATT CUMANI SET TO HIT THE MARK

Vic Husslers trainer Matt Cumani announced that Team Captain is back in the stable after a short break and will start his Autumn campaign in mid February. Matt has Coup de Tonnerre $6.50 with Sportsbet as his top chance for the day. He won two starts back, maps to get a gun run and is now at peak fitness.

BET: Coup de Tonnerre – Each Way (Caulfield Race 2)

CIARON MAHER JOINS THE MARINE

Busy time for Ciaron Maher and Dave Eustace between the inspection of yearlings and keeping their stable machine winning on the track. Marine One (Race 4) makes the most appeal to me particularly at the $3.90 on offer. He’s won 3 of his 4 starts this campaign, the only time he missed out was in the Group 1 Coolmore.
