TWIR THE CARNIVAL IS OVER BUT NOT THE WINNERS

Apr 22, 2022

The Autumn Carnival may be over but the winners will keep flowing with three good meetings for our TRL trainers to continue their good form.

For the eighth straight week, we are racing on a Heavy track in Sydney, while Doomben is currently rated good with Caulfield expecting a bit of inclement weather.

Time to find some of the best chances of our TRL trainers.

GAI TO TAKE COMMAND AT RANDWICK

Gai Waterhouse is on the verge of posting 150 Group 1 winners – a remarkable feat.

With no majors scheduled this weekend she’ll have to wait but would take a double at Randwick with Command Approved (Race 1) and Surf Dancer (Race 9).

Command Approved won on a Heavy track on debut, is first up on Saturday but won its lead-up trial in great fashion.

Surf Dancer is a big odds and has already been specked in Sportsbet markets firming from $21 to $18. It takes a while for these European gallopers to settle into their new surroundings and I’m keen to stick this campaign.

BET: Command Approved – Each Way (Randwick Race 1)

BET: Surf Dancer – Each Way (Randwick Race 9)

PRICE AND KENT HAVE A SENSE OF HONOUR

The Mick Price/Michael Kent Junior yard delivered a double for TRL owners last weekend, let’s hope their great form continues.

At Randwick, Sense of Honour (Race 5) is rated a $4.80 chance at Sportsbet, she will improve from her first-up third, conditions suit and she has won 2 of 4.

At Caulfield, Lombardo (Race 7) won two starts back and the 1200m looks perfect for him.

Extreme Warrior (Race 8) is tight in the Sportsbet market at $2, he won his first two starts last preparation and looks to be a real nice horse in the making.

BET: Lombardo – Each Way (Caulfield Race 7)

BET: Extreme Warrior – Win (Caulfield Race 9)

BUSY DAY FOR CIARON MAHER

It’s another busy day for the Maher/Eustace yard across Randwick and Caulfield.

At Randwick, Quinetello (Race 6) is the $2.80 favourite with James McDonald in the saddle. It’s a horse that thrives in Heavy going and has been sent north to take advantage of the track.

Nikau Spur (Race 10) was a fast-finishing third first-up and really caught the eye.

At Caulfield, Grandslam $2.80 can be a little hard to catch, but handled the jump in distance well last start and has a great third-up record.

Sir Bailey (Race 6) has the advantage of Jamie Kah to ride, had no luck stuck wide in a listed race last start but still showed plenty of fight and is worth following.

BET: Quintello – Win (Randwick Race 6)

BET: Nikau Spur – Each Way (Randwick Race 10)

BET: Grandslam – Win (Caulfield Race 4)

BET: Sir Bailey – Each Way (Caulfield Race 6)

O’DEA AND HOYSTED TO STAR AT DOOMBEN

There’s been tremendous communication from Steve O’Dea regarding Maroon Magic who jumps out for his new stable next Tuesday in Brisbane before heading to the races.

The stable has a strong hope early on at Doomben on Saturday.

Teranga (Race 4) has had only 3 starts for 2 wins and while this 3yo filly is stepping up in grade, she has a touch of class.

BET: Teranga – Each Way (Doomben Race 4)

GOLLAN LOOKS SET TO DOMINATE

Tony Gollan won’t have a moment to rest at Doomben on Saturday with a mountain of runners and some are at attractive odds.

Tavion Prince, is now fully fit, has drawn well in barrier 6 and should get a lovely run and be able to finish off.

Shamaton, is coming off a good second last start and at $5 with Sportsbet looks to be a good each way play.

Ulysses, was the horse who jumped out of the ground for his new stable two starts back, he also finished a great third at his last outing and is worth sticking with.

BET: Tavion Prince – Each Way (Doomben Race 2)

BET: Shamaton – Each Way (Doomben Race 6)

BET: Ulysses – Each Way (Doomben Race 9)

TOBY AND TRENT HAVE THE EDGE

Some horses just love feeling fresh and Alpine Edge is certainly one of those horses.

He lines up in Race 6 at Doomben for Toby and Trent Edmonds, with an impeccable first-up record of 2 from 2 and I’m happy to take the $7.50 on Sportsbet that he’ll keep that winning record intact.

Good luck and good punting

TWIR THE CARNIVAL IS OVER BUT NOT THE WINNERS

Apr 22, 2022

Cool Jakey was the King of Warwick Farm  on Wednesday and NSW Tycoons owners would like to package the Metropolitan track and just take it wherever Cool Jakey goes after he kept his undefeated record intact.

It’s remarkable that ‘Jakey’, trained on track and stabled across the road with Joe Pride, is one of those athletes, albeit of the equine kind, who thrives on his home ground.

He won on debut at Warwick Farm way back in February of 2023 and the love affair hasn’t ended, Cool Jakey has now won 4 from 4 at ‘The Farm’ and there’s plenty more wins in store for your son of Pierro.

BOUNCE BACK FACTOR

As Tycoons were made aware of, there’s a theory in racing that when a horse suffers from cardiac arrhythmia, “you must back it next start” and they win.

And that was certainly the message after Cool Jakey suffered cardiac arrhythmia the previous start at Randwick, with Joe Pride telling Tycoons in the pre-race late mail, “Don’t worry about what happened last start, the horse is fine and he looks great,” how right Joe was with Cool Jakey leading all the way.

HIPPO FROM BARRIER TO BOX

Adam Hyeronimus was having his first sit on Cool Jakey and he rode him a treat. We joked before the race “just go to the front and improve your position” and that’s exactly what he did.

“He jumped well and found a nice rhythm straight away, he had a nice time so I let him slide early into it at the 600metres so we did go a bit early.

“He felt fantastic throughout the run and was doing it easily, so I did get a bit of a surprise how quickly he stopped.

“So maybe I did go too early, but in saying that, maybe seven furlongs is his upper limit. On that effort he’ll be winning again” Jockey Adam Hyeronimus said.

JOE DELIGHTED

“That was good guys” trainer Joe Pride said, with a big smile to a large contingent of NSW Tycoons on Cool Jakey returning to scale.

“Look it was nice to see him win on a track that wasn’t bottomless wet, it opens up a lot more opportunities for him.

“In saying that if there was a 1400m for him in a fortnight on a Good track I would probably be reluctant to start him. We need to nurse him through it and the next month – six weeks isn’t going to be easy because it’s carnival time.

WHATS NEXT – PACK YOUR BAGS

The Tycoons have been very patient with Cool Jakey and their patience has been rewarded. He is building a very nice career record which stands at only 13 starts for 5 wins and a minor placing and is now pushing the $200,000 in prize money.

‘Jakey’ has initially pulled up well, but we all know that he is a delicate soul and has to be treated with kindness and Joe is reluctant to push him too hard too quickly. Which is fair enough.

“We might even consider travelling him maybe to Melbourne or Brisbane for a wet track, we just need to look after him.

“He’s been a good horse for us, we will look after him and his best opportunities will come in the Winter,” Joe concluded.

Congratulations to all NSW Tycoons and winning connections.

Go you good thing!
